Ekam… Son of Soil, opened to house full theaters everywhere. One couldn’t even get the tickets, everyone was jubilant. Then came the reviews… some said, Ekam is a movie, the likes of which has never been seen before.. others said.. was there a movie in it? and now there seem to be two factions, one who totally adore Ekam, the other which simply detest it. We, however wonder what to say.. and decided to consider the facts:
The songs of the movie are undoubtedly very good. Music is brilliant. It doesnt go with the atmosphere of the film, but nevertheless really good compositions. Obviously Lyrics are plain brilliant as nothing less can be expected of Babbu Maan and the same goes for his singing.
Shooting of the songs, on the other hand is a totally different matter. Half of the songs are above par, but half of them are rushed through. In one of the song sequence, camera actually cuts of Babbu Maan’s head and shows only his body. Thats a very rookie mistake. The songs could have been shot well, which would have enhanced the films’ appeal.
Dialogues are brilliant. Great job there. The audience actually clapped in the cinemas atleast 10 times on certain dialogues.
The plot of the film is terrible, there are too many discrepancies in it. Too many contradictions. Most of the themes criss cross each other and nothing reaches its goal. There are two huge contradictions in the film. Firstly, in the very beginning when Ekam comes back to India, he himself drives the car harshly, and later he gets his step brother arrested for that very reason. Secondly, in the beginning he burns the Sheller himself and later in the film he fights for the cause of farmers. And if the family was in economical situation, why not sell their 60 Lakh worth Audi? And how many cars did they have anyway? That’s unacceptable. What happens to his step mother, once he takes her in at village? What happens to his step brother? Lets just leave it at that a lot of what happens can be added to a lot of things in Ekam..
Cinematography of the film, thankfully is very good. The locations and feel of the villages is amazingly done well. The film actually brings about the true aspect of Punjab. One could feel the soil indeed.
Editing of the film is very immature. Cinematography looses all its impact due to bad editing. The scenes open with jerky feel to them and move here and there without any connection. Mostly the viewer ends up wondering who is speaking whose dialogues. Not just the editing, there are some awkward moments in the film as well. One of the most awkward scenes was when MLA goes to Ekam’s mother to talk about the marriage of Ekam and his daughter. He actually holds her hand… that was shockingly indecent.. was there something going on between the two of them?
Acting is average. Babbu Maan didnt show much zeal in his character. He is mostly inert in the film. He is best only when it comes to interact with PhD. girl Mohitinder Bawa, where they argue about the fate of Punjab. Bhagwant Maan has done well, but he gets out of character at least once when he doesnt stutter at all. But his character doesnt develop fully and dies intermittently. Mohitinder Bawa looks good, but her dialog delivery is too harsh for on screen. Mandy Takhar did her part well. She justified her character and did what she had to do, sadly she had very little to do in the film. The best actor of all was Amrik Gill who played his part extraordinary well. Just brilliant.
Costumes were also nice. They suited well in the film, and didnt stand too gaudy. The best dresses were of Mohitinder Bawa who plays the role of a PhD Scholar.
Now, in theater, we were confused at what was going on. The theater was house full and crowd was responsive. At certain dialogues they clapped heartedly, but on the other hand also made fun of the film at times. Sometimes at awkward moments. Like the whole theater laughed at the death of Sarpanch. That was supposed to be a very serious scene, but crowd was laughing at his death.. one viewer even said “Oye eh ethe pahunchya kiwein, adh vichale drakhat de faansi kiwein le layi…”. There was laughter in the cinema, when Ekam’s father gets a paralysis attack and the same when he dies. The same happened when Bhagwant Maan died. The whole house was jeering during the climax action sequence. It seems that Ekam couldnt bring about the tragedy all these characters were suffering. The scenes which were supposed to make people cry, actually induced such remarks as “Oye eh ta Mar Geya Oye…” “Jeeb kiwein kaddi a sarpanch ne” “Oye pagg ta sambhal la…” “Oye Gypsy udd gayi oye” “Mera Pulser ta chalang ni Marda… ”
Indeed, as per tickets sold, the film is a hit, but critically, the film became a hit due to Babbu Maan’s fan following. Imagine Ekam with Jimmy Shergill in it. Only Babbu Maan has the charisma to have managed such a success. When the show ended and we were coming out of tehater, one of the viewer summed it up brilliantly.. “Babbu Maan ta Punjab da Rajnikant a bai… “

Its not the question if he will or not… its a hypothesis :D What if he does play such a role. Jimmy Shergill has done Tera Mera KI Rishta. Now imagine Babby Maan as Preet in TMKR. we will end up at the same result. No one fits in the other’s shoes.

i haven’t seen the movie yet but my mom n dad in india have seen it they said its so so movie and my mom said that Babbu Mann looks kind od old in the movie.

Babbu mann indedd brot up a very gud topic! the reality for once in punjab and the fact that his fan following made the muvie a hit is sumthign i defo agree widh, no one wudv watched it if sum newcumer had made a muvie on this topic, had this kind of editing and acting .. it all went well cause of babbu mann

Thanks for seconding that up. Its a good thing and a bad one that we have singers in Punjabi Films. Good as investors are producing films based on Punjabi singers and the films are being made. Bad, as there are no trained actors in the arena. In Punjab, Films and Music is getting amalgamated, which would not survive for long.
Hmmm the actors are dere. .punjab got loads of talents.. but its just . .money nd the fact dat a new comerrs got no chance of making a hit unless they do really gud promotion, marketing of the movie. Not just actors, actreses directors.. there are so mny of them but dese singers are outshining them.. i wish our public were more welcuming to new actuall actors
Even if the Public would welcome a new comer and even if the said actor is good at what he does..or if its a she… a producer would go for a singer for the value of money. They would look for a safe play. its quite understandable, but it starts to worry as for how long would this work?
Untill new singers keeps coming, untill new directors keep casting them, and untill new producers are willing to spend money on dem, but i guess it all depends on us, untill we keep watching their movies

Film topic and its message was nice. Music and comedy was good. Songs were not correlated properly with the movie. Voice of phd scholar Mohitinder Bawa was not accepatble. Mandy thakar did well. Binu Dhillon and Sarpanch did well. Babbu mann also did great but some scenes were so so. Last scene with MLA was not acceptable. Dialogue delivery by Babbu mann was not so good with MLA at the end.
You can say little bit better than an average movie acting wise.

I have seen this movie in Canada.I would say it is superhit movie.Just imagine how difficult it is to make this type of movie with limited resources.Babu Maan’s effort is unbelievable.And moreover no one can make a perfect movie even in bollywood.He has shown the reality otherwise which is missing in punjabi movies now a days.Songs are heart touching ,villege is real not just fake set. thanks
Well, I saw (unwillingly) a pirated copy of the movie in the US, as Ekam was not shown in theatres. There are realities and some confusions. It takes guts to produce a movie and apni Punjabi janta laughs at no reasons! give every body an encouraging comment so they make another better movie. We Punjabis need Punjabi movies and it can be possible only when we praise them. Though I like the review, fair comments!
